Dalam cerita
Yunani kuno, ada seorang dewi cantik bernama Demeter yang menjaga bumi. Ia
sangat menyukai masa panen, sementara anak perempuannya, Persephone, menyukai
bunga-bunga musim semi.
Di bawah
permukaan bumi hiduplah seorang dewa bernama Hades. Tanahnya gelap dan suram.
Ia menculik Persephone karena kecemerlangannya. Persephone berguna untuk
menyinari dunia Hades. Demeter sangat kehilangan anaknya, sehingga ia berhenti
menjaga bumi. Bumi pun mongering. Tanaman mati dan orang-orang mati kelaparan.
Demeter berkata kepada dewa-dewa bahwa ia tidak bisa menjaga bumi sampai
anaknya pulang. Maka Zeus sang penguasa nirwana, menyuruh Hades untuk
mengembalikan Persephone kepada ibunya. Tetapi Zeus punya peraturan. Jika Persephone
pernah makan sesuatu dari dunia bawah tanah, ia tidak bisa kembali.
Ketika Demeter melihat anaknya
kembali, ia sangat bahagia bunga-bunga kembali bermekaran. Lalu, ia mendengar
kenyataan yang pahit. Persephone pernah makan empat benih delima ketika tinggal
bersama Hades. Persephone harus kembali kepada Hades. Itu artinya, bumi akan

Demeter really miss her, so she stopped
keeping the earth.
The earth dried. Plants die and people starve to death.
Demeter said to the gods that he could not keep the earth until her return.
So
Zeus the lord nirvana, ordered Hades to return Persephone to her mother.
But
Zeus has rules. If Persephone never eaten anything out of the underground
world,
she could not return.
When Demeter
saw her daughter back, she was very happy and the flowers return blooming.
Then, she heard
a bitter reality.
Persephone ever eaten four pomegranate seeds while staying
with Hades.
Persephone must returns to Hades.
That means, the earth will die.
Zeus did not want to bear this out.
Zeus decided that Persephone would stay
with Hades for four months every year,
one month for every seed that has been
eaten.
Since then,
the earth became cold and dark when Persephone leaves Demeter.
But when she
returned, the flowers are blooming and the sun is shining brightly.
Mother and
daughter enjoy the summer together,
but when the time comes for Persephone to
leave her mother,
the plants begin to die and the earth becomes increasingly
cold.
